Hong Kong, who won the toss and decided to bat first put up a good total of 149 for 4 in their 20 overs. Openers Anshuman Rath (48) and Nizakat Khan (52) batted well with the latter impressively reaching his half-century. But Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka were impressive bowlers, with two and one wicket respectively.
Sri Lanka’s chase began sedately, and they trailed Hong Kong at the end of the PowerPlay. Pathum Nissanka, though, played a brilliant innings to turn things around. Hit by Hong Kong fielders no fewer than four times an innings of 68 runs from 44 balls, with his 18th T20I half-century was bang out of the top drawer for Nissanka.
Sri Lanka then suffered a dramatic collapse in the wake of Nissanka’s run-out, losing four wickets for eight runs. This created a tense finish. But Wanindu Hasaranga stood up, hitting a quickfire 20 and smashing a six and two fours to ensure the win for Sri Lanka with seven balls to spare.
