The Netherlands secured their place in the Nations League quarter-finals with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Hungary on Saturday, while Germany made history with a record-breaking 7-0 demolition of Bosnia and Herzegovina, capping off a thrilling night of international football.
In a dramatic, winner-takes-all clash in Group A3, the Dutch dominated Hungary at the Johan Cruyff Arena, sealing a spot alongside Germany in the next round. The victory came after a tense first half, which saw two crucial penalties converted by Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo, giving the Oranje a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime.
The match was briefly interrupted in the seventh minute following a medical emergency on the Hungarian bench, where assistant coach Adam Szalai required urgent treatment. The 36-year-old Szalai was stretchered off the pitch to a round of applause, and the Hungarian Football Association later confirmed he was in stable condition at an Amsterdam hospital.
The incident put a temporary halt to the game, but once play resumed, the Netherlands wasted no time asserting their dominance. Weghorst opened the scoring after a handball by Hungarian defender Tamas Nikitscher in the box, with the referee consulting VAR before awarding the penalty. Just before halftime, Gakpo doubled the Dutch lead from the spot after a foul on Donyell Malen.

In the second half, Denzel Dumfries added a third with a clinical volley off a flick-on from Malen, and Teun Koopmeiners sealed the win in the 86th minute, scoring his first international goal since 2022 with a header from a corner.
“We always try to improve,” said Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk, “but in the end, we deserved the win.”
Meanwhile, Germany’s stunning 7-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina marked the largest margin of victory in Nations League history. The Germans were ruthless from the outset, with Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala opening the floodgates just two minutes in with a header from Joshua Kimmich’s precise cross. Tim Kleindienst added a second in the 23rd minute, and Kai Havertz made it 3-0 before halftime with a calm finish after a slick one-two with Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz, who was at the heart of Germany’s attacking play, continued his dazzling performance in the second half, scoring a brilliant free-kick from the left wing in the 50th minute before doubling his tally just seven minutes later. Leroy Sane added a sixth for the hosts in the 66th minute, and Kleindienst rounded off the rout in the 79th minute with a close-range finish from Antonio Rudiger’s pinpoint cross.
“It was good fun tonight,” Musiala said after the match. “Once we got a couple of goals, we did the work defensively, and then everything clicked offensively. The more we played like this, the more fun we had.”
The emphatic victory leaves Germany top of Group A3 with 15 points, five ahead of the Netherlands, who will join them in the quarter-finals with a total of 10 points.
As the group stage nears its conclusion, Germany and the Netherlands have already secured their places in the knockout rounds, while Hungary and Bosnia remain eliminated.
