Virat Kohli etched his name into the annals of Indian cricket history on Day 3 of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru, becoming the 4th Indian cricketer to reach the prestigious milestone of 9,000 Test runs. With a gritty and fluent half-century, Kohli powered his way to the landmark, reaffirming his place among the elite batsmen of world cricket.
Kohli, who batted at No. 3 for the second time in this match, entered the day needing 53 runs to reach the 9,000-run mark. Despite a duck in the first innings, he looked in control from the outset, reaching his 50 off just 70 balls, including five boundaries and a stunning six off Ajaz Patel. The Indian skipper displayed grit and composure, taking just nine more balls to cross the 9,000-run threshold.
Kohli’s achievement makes him the 18th player in the history of Test cricket to reach the 9,000-run mark and one of only three active players to do so, alongside England’s Joe Root and Australia’s Steven Smith. The Indian batting maestro joins the ranks of Indian legends such as Sachin Tendulkar (15,921 runs), Rahul Dravid (13,265 runs), and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122 runs) in the exclusive 9,000-run club.
However, it hasn’t been an easy road for Kohli, as he took 197 innings to achieve this milestone, making him the sixth-slowest player to reach 9,000 Test runs. This statistic highlights the competitive nature of the record books. For comparison, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara holds the record for the fastest 9,000 Test runs, having achieved the feat in just 172 innings, with Steven Smith and Rahul Dravid close behind in 174 innings. Kohli is the slowest Indian to achieve the milestone, trailing behind Dravid (174 innings), Tendulkar (179 innings), and Gavaskar (192 innings).
Despite the slightly slower pace, Kohli’s recent form has shown his enduring quality. After a difficult start in the series, he bounced back strongly with this half-century, marking his first Test fifty since December 2023. His partnership with young star Sarfaraz Khan injected new life into India’s chances in the ongoing match, providing much-needed stability after a challenging opening.

Looking ahead, Kohli’s next major target is to join the elite 10,000-run club in Test cricket, where he will have the opportunity to surpass some of the greatest batsmen in the game’s history. Currently, he is just 1,100 runs away from overtaking Sunil Gavaskar to become the third-highest run-scorer for India in Tests. With two more Tests against New Zealand and a challenging five-Test series in Australia set to follow, Kohli has the perfect platform to achieve this milestone and add another feather to his illustrious cap.
As Kohli continues to chase records and milestones, his contribution to Indian cricket remains invaluable, and this latest achievement further cements his legacy as one of the game’s all-time greats.
