In the first T20I of the three-match series at the Rose Bowl, Australia secured a 28-run victory over England, thanks to Travis Head’s explosive innings of 59 off just 23 balls. His quick runs, along with Adam Zampa’s excellent bowling (2-20), gave Australia a 1-0 lead in the series.

Australia batted first after rain delayed the toss. Head’s aggressive start helped his team reach 86 runs with just one ball left in the powerplay. Head and Matt Short hit 15 boundaries in the first 35 balls. However, after the field restrictions were lifted, England’s bowlers fought back. Liam Livingstone and Adil Rashid, England’s two leg-spinners, combined to take 4 wickets for 45 runs. Australia was eventually bowled out for 179 with three balls remaining.

In reply, England struggled to chase the target of 180, especially as the temperature dropped, making it difficult for their batters to find form. With stand-in captain Phil Salt and coach Marcus Trescothick leading the side, England quickly fell to 52 for 4. Despite a brief partnership of 54 runs between Livingstone (37) and Sam Curran, their chase crumbled, and they were bowled out for 151.

Australia’s Josh Hazlewood dismissed Will Jacks in his first over, while David Warner took a spectacular catch to remove debutant Jordan Cox. England’s problems worsened when Salt was caught at deep square leg, and Jacob Bethell chopped onto his stumps from Zampa’s leg spin. Although Livingstone provided some hope with a 17-run over against Marcus Stoinis, he and Curran were both dismissed shortly after, sealing England’s fate.

Australia faced a minor scare when Xavier Bartlett appeared to suffer a side injury, forcing Cameron Green to finish his over. Green capped off the match with a fantastic diving catch to dismiss Rashid.
