In a significant shift for New Zealand cricket, Tim Southee has announced his resignation as Test captain following a disappointing series defeat in Sri Lanka. The 35-year-old bowler, who led the team in 14 Tests, will be succeeded by Tom Latham, who previously captained the side between 2020 and 2022.
Southee’s leadership saw the team six wins, six losses, and two draws since he took over from Kane Williamson in 2022. However, the recent series in Sri Lanka culminated in two defeats, including a heavy innings loss in the second Test, extending the team’s losing streak to four matches, interspersed with an abandoned fixture against Afghanistan.
Reflecting on his tenure, Southee expressed pride in captaining the Blackcaps, stating, “It has been an absolute honor and a privilege. I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career, and I believe this decision is the best for the team.”
He emphasized his desire to focus on his performance as a player, aiming to contribute to New Zealand’s success in upcoming matches, particularly in the challenging three-Test series against India later this month.

Southee’s own form has faced scrutiny, with only 12 wickets in his last eight Tests. As he steps aside, he will return to the squad alongside promising bowlers like Matt Henry and Ben Sears, following O’Rourke’s strong showing in Sri Lanka.
Notably, Southee reaffirmed his commitment to New Zealand cricket and the Test format, stating, “I love Test cricket and it’s a game I care deeply about.” His selfless decision to relinquish the captaincy has been praised by head coach Gary Stead and NZC CEO Scott Weenink, both recognizing his dedication to the team.
Latham’s return to the captaincy marks a pivotal moment as New Zealand prepares for a grueling series in India. The squad for this tour will be announced in the coming days, heralding a new chapter in the Blackcaps’ Test campaign.
