Former Australia captain and ex-India coach Greg Chappell has extended his support to out-of-favour India opener Prithvi Shaw, urging him to embrace a journey of self-reflection and focus on the process rather than results as he battles to regain his place in Indian cricket.
Shaw, 24, has faced a series of setbacks recently, with poor fitness and off-field issues leading to his exclusion from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad. His brief stint with Northamptonshire in the 2024 season was also disappointing, with Shaw managing just one half-century in 11 innings. Additionally, Shaw had a difficult IPL 2024 campaign, scoring only 198 runs in eight games.
In a heartfelt letter to Shaw, Chappell acknowledged the challenges the young cricketer is facing and emphasized that setbacks are part of every great athlete’s journey. Drawing parallels with legendary figures like Don Bradman, who faced his own career struggles, Chappell reminded Shaw that how he responds to adversity would ultimately define his future.

“The past doesn’t define you, Prithvi. It’s what you do from here that matters,” Chappell wrote. “You’re still in your prime, with so many years ahead to make your mark.”
Chappell, who first encountered Shaw during the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, where Shaw captained India to the title, encouraged the opener to focus on building his mental and physical strength. He advised Shaw to shift from a results-oriented approach to a process-focused mindset, a shift that transformed Chappell’s own approach to cricket during his career.
“Take this time to visualize the cricketer and person you want to become,” Chappell continued. “Surround yourself with people who inspire you to improve, and commit to growth and change. The door back to the Indian team is open if you’re willing to walk through it.”
Chappell concluded the letter by reaffirming his belief in Shaw’s potential and offering his support. “Know that I—and many others—believe in you and are here to support your journey back to the top.”
With Shaw still young and full of promise, Chappell’s message is a reminder that despite the challenges, the path to redemption is always open for those willing to put in the work.
