Australia’s cricket team is set to embark on a pivotal tour of Sri Lanka in late January 2025, which will feature two Test matches at the iconic Galle International Stadium and a one-off One Day International (ODI). The tour is crucial as it may significantly influence both teams’ standings in the World Test Championship race.
The two Tests are scheduled to take place from January 29 to February 2 and February 6 to 10, while the ODI will be held on February 13 at a venue yet to be confirmed. This ODI will serve as vital preparation for the upcoming Champions Trophy, which is slated to occur in Pakistan shortly after the tour.
The last encounter between the two teams in Sri Lanka in 2022 ended in a tightly contested 1-1 draw, with Australia clinching a thrilling victory in the opening Test, only for Sri Lanka to level the series in dramatic fashion thanks to a stunning debut performance from Prabath Jayasuriya.

As Australia gears up for the tour, there are concerns regarding the availability of captain Pat Cummins, who may be absent due to the birth of his second child. Head coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged the situation, stating, “If he wants to miss a Test, that’s fine with us. Family comes first.”
The Australian squad is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka on January 20, with players involved in the Big Bash League (BBL) potentially available until the end of the regular season. McDonald and chair of selectors George Bailey have indicated plans to select players who are specifically suited to the challenging Sri Lankan conditions.
Former Australian spinner Steve O’Keefe has emphasized the importance of prioritizing red-ball preparation for spinners who will accompany Nathan Lyon, suggesting that preparation in the BBL may not be the most effective approach. O’Keefe stated, “I’d be encouraging the selectors to let these spinners be going earlier and practice with a red ball in between Big Bash games.”
With a potentially game-changing series on the horizon, both Australia and Sri Lanka will be eager to make their mark as they prepare for the tests ahead.
