Ricky Ponting has made significant strides in shaping his support staff for the Punjab Kings as he embarks on a four-year journey with the franchise. The former Australian cricket captain has recruited James Hopes, a former allrounder and one of his trusted aides during their time at the Delhi Capitals.
Hopes, who had a notable playing career representing Australia in 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is, was offered an extension by the Delhi Capitals after Ponting’s contract expired but opted to join Ponting at Punjab Kings. He brings with him a wealth of experience, having played for the Capitals in the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2008.
The hiring of Hopes indicates a shift in the coaching dynamic, as it coincides with the departure of Charl Langeveldt, the former South African pacer who served as the fast-bowling coach for the past two seasons. Langeveldt had also previously held the role of bowling coach during the 2020 season under Trevor Bayliss.
Ponting has decided to retain Brad Haddin, who has been with the franchise for several years as an assistant coach, focusing on batting and wicket-keeping. Haddin previously worked alongside Ponting at SunRisers Hyderabad, making his continuation in the role a logical choice. Additionally, Sunil Joshi, the former Indian spinner and chief selector, will remain as the spin bowling coach, having contributed to the franchise for the last couple of seasons.
In a shake-up of the coaching staff, the franchise has parted ways with Sanjay Bangar, who had been hired as head of cricket development just last year but saw his three-year contract terminated early. However, other members of the coaching team, including strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux and physiotherapist Andrew Leipus, will retain their positions.

Ponting’s immediate priority will be to finalize the player retention list ahead of the IPL auction. The Punjab Kings are expected to enter the auction with one of the highest available purses. Among the key players under consideration for retention is Arshdeep Singh, the left-arm pacer who has garnered attention for his performance. While there are discussions about whether to retain him for the suggested INR 18 crore, there is a possibility he could be secured for a lower amount via a Right to Match (RTM) card.
Other names in the retention mix include Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, both of whom had impressive seasons last year and could be retained as uncapped players for INR 4 crore each.
With these changes, Ponting aims to build a competitive team capable of challenging for the IPL title in the upcoming seasons.
