In the SA20 auction 2024, which set the stage for the upcoming SA20 season, South African opener Reeza Hendricks commanded the spotlight, fetching a staggering bid of R4.3 million from MI Cape Town. The team clinched Hendricks in a heated bidding war against the Pretoria Capitals, showcasing the batter’s enduring appeal despite a disappointing T20 World Cup earlier this year.
Released by Joburg Super Kings ahead of the auction, Hendricks has regained his form with back-to-back half-centuries against Ireland in the UAE, reaffirming his position as a valuable asset in the T20 circuit. He will reunite with his Lions teammates Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton at Cape Town, bolstering the team’s batting lineup.
“Reeza Hendricks adds a lot to the group in terms of his skill,” MI Cape Town coach Robin Peterson stated. “He is an international, quality cricketer with lots of experience at the top of the order.”
In a flurry of activity following the auction, the Super Kings unveiled Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana as their wildcard player. Having found success with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, Pathirana can make his SA20 debut in the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, notable players Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi went unsold during the auction, as franchises scrambled to fill just 13 available slots. Durban’s Super Giants secured West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph for R425,000, marking a significant addition as they seek to enhance their pace attack.
The reigning champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, continued their investment in fast bowling, acquiring England’s Richard Gleeson for R2.3 million. Gleeson, known for his speed and wicket-taking ability, is expected to play a pivotal role in the team alongside fellow quick Craig Overton.
Additionally, MI Cape Town welcomed batter Colin Ingram and off-spinner Dane Piedt for their base price of R175,000 each, with Piedt set to make his first SA20 appearance in the next edition after returning from a brief retirement.
The auction highlighted a blend of local talent and international stars, with Graeme Smith, SA20 commissioner and former South Africa captain, expressing optimism about the competitive balance of the upcoming season. “I think all six teams look very strong,” he remarked, emphasizing the league’s goal to enhance the strength of South African players.
As teams finalize their squads, anticipation builds for the SA20 2025 season, set to commence on January 9. Fans eagerly await the clash of talent, strategy, and ambition on the cricketing stage.
