India’s experienced all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his support for Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood, who has faced criticism following Pakistan’s home Test series loss to Bangladesh. Ashwin praised Masood’s abilities, acknowledging the challenges of leading the team, especially with Babar Azam being the most prominent figure in Pakistan cricket.

“I feel really bad for Shan Masood. He’s a very smart cricketer, and I know him personally. He’s sensible and could be an excellent captain for Pakistan,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

He added, “But managing a team like Pakistan, especially when Babar Azam is no longer captain but still the face of the nation’s cricket, is not an easy task.”

Shan Masood took over as Pakistan’s Test captain after Babar stepped down following a disappointing ODI World Cup in 2023. His first challenge as captain came during the tour of Australia, where despite some promising moments, Pakistan was swept 3-0 in the Test series. Masood has led Pakistan in five Tests, but unfortunately, they have lost all five matches.

Pakistan’s next Test series will be against England on home soil, but their recent home record is worrying. The team hasn’t won a Test match at home in their last 10 attempts, with four of those ending in draws.

Ashwin Shocked by Pakistan’s Decline

Ashwin expressed disbelief over Pakistan’s current situation, as they have fallen to eighth in the ICC Test Team Rankings and are struggling in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25, with slim chances of reaching the final.

“Pakistan cricket has declined so much, it’s difficult to comprehend. Ten years ago, with players like Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, and even when they played in the UAE, they were very tough to beat. They had quality bowlers like Yasir Shah and other talented spinners. To see where they are now is shocking,” Ashwin remarked.

Ashwin Prepares for His Return

Despite Pakistan’s struggles, India continues to dominate in home conditions, having not lost a Test series at home since 2012. Ashwin has played a crucial role in maintaining this impressive record and is set to return for the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh, which begins on September 19
