Former India seamer Paras Mhambrey is set to make his return to Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of IPL 2025, this time as the team’s bowling coach. Mhambrey, who previously held an assistant coach role with MI, will work closely with the franchise’s current bowling coach, Lasith Malinga, and newly appointed head coach Mahela Jayawardene.

Mhambrey’s return to MI comes after a highly successful stint as India’s bowling coach, where he served under head coach Rahul Dravid from 2021 until August 2024. During his tenure, Mhambrey played an instrumental role in guiding India’s bowling attack to numerous successes, including the T20 World Cup win in West Indies.

His association with MI is a well-established one, having been part of the coaching staff when the franchise claimed the IPL title in 2013 and won the Champions League T20 in 2011 and 2013. Mhambrey’s extensive experience will be invaluable as he teams up once again with Malinga, one of the most successful bowlers in MI’s history, and Jayawardene, who returns to the head coach role after a short hiatus.

In addition to his time with the Indian team, Mhambrey has deep experience in domestic cricket. He was notably at the helm of the India A team and played a key role in Bengal’s consecutive Ranji Trophy final appearances in 2005-06 and 2006-07. As a player, Mhambrey represented Mumbai in domestic cricket, taking 284 wickets in 91 first-class matches and 111 wickets in 83 List A games. He also earned two Test and three ODI caps for India between 1996 and 1998.

MI’s coaching reshuffle comes in the wake of a disappointing 2024 IPL campaign, where the team finished at the bottom of the points table with only four wins in 14 games under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. The addition of Mhambrey to the coaching staff signals MI’s intent to regroup and challenge for the IPL title in 2025.

Mumbai Indians are currently preparing for the new season, with their first major task being to finalize the list of player retentions ahead of the October 31 deadline. The revamped coaching team, led by Jayawardene, will play a key role in shaping the squad for the upcoming season.

With Mhambrey’s proven track record and MI’s history of success, fans will be hoping for a much-improved performance as the team gears up for IPL 2025.
