In a dramatic shift from their usual strategy, Pakistan has named a significantly different lineup for the second Test against England, opting for an all-spin attack that includes three specialist spinners. The move comes as Pakistan seeks to turn the tide after a difficult start to the series, with their pace bowlers struggling to make an impact and injury concerns further complicating their options.

With both Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah unavailable due to fitness and form issues, Pakistan’s bowling attack has undergone a radical transformation. The team has named Noman Ali, Zahid Mahmood, and Sajid Khan as their primary spin options, with seam-bowling allrounder Aamer Jamal the only fast bowler in the XI. This marks a significant departure from the green-top pitches Pakistan had previously expressed a desire to produce at home, which typically favour seam and swing bowlers.

A Radical Shift

The decision to go heavy on spin is a remarkable turnaround for Pakistan, which had, just two months ago, controversially fielded an all-seam attack in Rawalpindi against Bangladesh. At that time, the team was keen on producing pitches conducive to pace bowling, reflecting a broader shift in their home strategy. However, with the England side proving impervious to Pakistan’s fast bowlers in the opening Test, the selectors have opted to embrace the turning conditions expected in Multan.

This strategic adjustment also comes in the wake of a crisis in Pakistan’s spin department. Their frontline spinner, Abrar Ahmed, was hospitalised following the first Test, further intensifying the need for depth in spin bowling. With the team struggling to find quality spinners in recent times, the selectors have decided to double down on spin with the inclusion of three specialists, despite concerns over the lack of recent red-ball experience for the trio.

Inexperienced Spinners in a High-Stakes Match

Noman Ali, Zahid Mahmood, and Sajid Khan will all play crucial roles, but their recent form in first-class cricket has raised some eyebrows. Noman last played a first-class match in October 2023, while Mahmood and Sajid have been inactive since January 2024. This lack of match practice at the highest level could pose a challenge against a potent England batting line-up that has shown little trouble facing Pakistan’s seamers in the previous Test.

The rest of the Pakistan squad remains largely unchanged, with Kamran Ghulam set to make his Test debut, replacing the out-of-form Babar Azam. Ghulam, known for his solid batting technique, will add depth to the middle order, while the team also retains Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel in the lineup. Jamal, who impressed in the previous Test with his seam-bowling prowess, will now shoulder the lion’s share of the fast-bowling duties, as Pakistan hopes the Multan pitch will turn and provide support for the spinners.

A Pivotal Moment for Pakistan’s Test Side

This Test match marks an important moment in Pakistan’s cricketing strategy, as the team looks to break a pattern of struggles at home. With a lack of quality spin options recently plaguing the team, this Test could provide an opportunity for the likes of Noman, Sajid, and Zahid to step up and make a significant impact. However, with the pressure mounting on Pakistan’s bowling attack, and only one seam option in the lineup, the team is taking a calculated risk that could either pay off or backfire against England’s formidable batting line-up.

The selection debate within the Pakistan camp was not without controversy, with discussions continuing until the last moment. The coaching staff, including assistant coach Azhar Mahmood, acknowledged that there had been intense deliberations on the final composition of the team. At one point, the selectors considered including an additional pace bowler, but eventually, they leaned towards the belief that the pitch in Multan would offer enough turn to warrant a spin-heavy attack.
