Warwickshire allrounder Jacob Bethell has been drafted into England’s Test squad for their upcoming tour of New Zealand, filling the void left by Jamie Smith, who will miss the entire trip due to paternity leave. Bethell, who celebrated his 21st birthday just days ago, has shown promise in limited-overs cricket, making his T20I and ODI debuts against Australia last month.
Bethell made a memorable impact during his white-ball debut series, particularly with a match-winning performance where he scored 44 runs off 24 balls in the second T20I at Cardiff. Despite his success in white-ball formats, he has limited experience in first-class cricket, having played only 20 County Championship matches and yet to score a first-class century.
His inclusion is the sole change to the 16-man squad that recently faced a 2-1 series defeat in Pakistan. Jordan Cox, previously an unused batting reserve, is also set to make his Test debut as a wicketkeeper in Smith’s absence.
The decision to include Bethell reflects England’s evolving selection strategy, which emphasizes potential and adaptability over traditional metrics such as batting and bowling averages. This approach has seen younger players like Leicestershire’s 20-year-old seamer Josh Hull and the spin duo of Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir earn spots in the Test setup.
At a recent PCA Awards ceremony, Bethell expressed his aspiration to play all formats for England, highlighting that a Test call-up has always been his ultimate goal. “It’s nice to tick off two of them [ODIs and T20Is] but definitely the best one’s yet to come,” he stated. “Test cricket has always been my dream… I know it’s taken a different shape in the last three years, but that’s still my dream.”
As for his role in the Test side, Bethell acknowledged his relative inexperience but remains optimistic. “I’m still finding that out,” he admitted. “I definitely made my role clearer this year in the white-ball stuff… I think I could be anywhere from opening the batting to batting No. 7.”
England’s three-Test series against New Zealand kicks off at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on November 28, with subsequent matches in Wellington and Hamilton on December 6 and December 14, respectively.
