The upcoming IPL mega auction is set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25, 2024. The two-day event, marking the second consecutive year that the auction will be held overseas, is set to clash with the third and fourth days of the India-Australia Test series in Perth, Australia.

The highly anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24-25, 2024. This marks the second consecutive year that the event will take place outside of India, following the inaugural overseas auction held in Dubai for IPL 2024. However, this timing poses a potential scheduling clash, as it coincides with the third and fourth days of the first Test between India and Australia in Perth, a fixture that will draw significant attention.

The IPL mega auction, held once every three years, is a key event in the Indian Premier League calendar, with franchises investing heavily to bolster their squads for the next three seasons. The two-day auction will see all 10 IPL teams jostling to sign players who will form the core of their squads from 2025 to 2027. With a total purse of INR 120 crore allocated for each team, the stakes are high as teams look to make strategic purchases in a bid to build championship-winning squads.

Key Retentions and Auction Preparations

Ahead of the auction, IPL teams had until October 31, 2024, to finalize their player retentions. A total of 46 players were retained across all franchises. Among the most notable retentions was Sunrisers Hyderabad’s decision to hold on to wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen for INR 23 crore, making him the costliest retention. Other significant retentions included Virat Kohli of Royal Challengers Bangalore and Nicholas Pooran of Lucknow Super Giants, both at INR 21 crore.

Mumbai Indians, known for their strategic squad-building, made headlines by retaining all their key Indian players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma, for a combined INR 75 crore. This move ensures that Mumbai will maintain its core strength heading into the 2025 season.

While Mumbai Indians secured their big names, some teams opted for a more frugal approach. Punjab Kings, for instance, retained just two uncapped players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, for a total of INR 9.5 crore, leaving them with the largest available purse of INR 110.5 crore for the upcoming auction. In contrast, Rajasthan Royals have the smallest available purse, standing at INR 41 crore after retaining six players, alongside Kolkata Knight Riders, who have INR 51 crore to spend.

RTM Options and Strategy

One of the defining features of the IPL mega auction is the Right-to-Match (RTM) option, which allows franchises to retain players they have let go of in the auction, provided they match the highest bid for the player. Teams with fewer retained players will have more RTM options. Punjab Kings, having retained only two players, have four RTM options, while Royal Challengers Bangalore, with three retained players, will have three RTM options.

Five teams—Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants—retained five players each and will have just one RTM option at the auction. In contrast, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders have no RTM options, as they retained the maximum number of six players.

The RTM system ensures that franchises can protect their core players from being poached by rivals. However, it also adds an additional layer of intrigue, as teams with RTM options may find themselves locked in bidding wars to retain key assets.

Looking Ahead to the Auction

As the IPL 2025 mega auction draws near, all eyes will be on how the franchises allocate their considerable budgets to strengthen their squads. With several big names expected to be up for grabs, the auction promises to be a spectacle for fans and pundits alike. Teams like Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals, with the most available funds, will likely play a crucial role in driving up the prices of high-demand players. At the same time, franchises like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will look to bolster their squads with strategic buys to maintain their dominance in the league.

The two-day auction is expected to be fast-paced and intense, with franchises under pressure to build a balanced team for the next three IPL seasons. As the IPL continues to grow in stature and global appeal, the Jeddah mega auction is likely to add a new dimension to the event, cementing the IPL’s place as one of the most lucrative and thrilling leagues in world cricket.
