Cricket South Africa has unveiled the squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, with Laura Wolvaardt set to lead the South African team for the first time at an ICC event. Wolvaardt, who will be captaining the finalists from the previous edition, will also be leading the squad in a three-match T20I series against Pakistan from September 16 to 20.
The Proteas Women’s team largely mirrors the lineup from the last World Cup held on home soil. Sune Luus, who captained the team to the T20 World Cup Final last year, remains a key player. She is joined by seasoned players Marizanne Kapp, Chloe Tryon, Nadine De Klerk, Tazmin Brits, Ayabonga Khaka, and Nonkululeko Mlaba.
The squad has seen a few changes with the inclusion of Seshnie Naidu, Eliz-Mari Marx, Tumi Sekhukhune, and Mieke De Ridder. Additionally, 19-year-old all-rounder Miané Smit will serve as a traveling reserve.
CSA Proteas Women Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez, commented, “Playing in the UAE introduces some uncertainties, but we’ve thoroughly researched and selected a squad that we believe will adapt well to the conditions. Laura has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, and we are eager to see her shine. Seshnie Naidu, in particular, has shown impressive growth as a bowler and could be a game-changer for us.”
South Africa will compete in Group B of the T20 World Cup alongside Bangladesh, Scotland, and the West Indies. Their campaign kicks off on October 4 against the West Indies.
