South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen has criticized the country’s limited international cricket schedule, calling for more matches across all formats. Klaasen expressed frustration with the Proteas’ two-match Test series, describing it as “ridiculous” and “disappointing.” The middle-order batter emphasized that shorter series are insufficient for building momentum and a competitive edge.
“Our Test team is playing two-Test series, which is ridiculous in my eyes,” Klaasen said. “It’s disappointing, and it doesn’t sit well with the players.” He also pointed out that South Africa rarely plays five-match series, which hampers their ability to develop consistency.
Klaasen, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, also noted the contrast with countries like India, which regularly plays longer series and has a more packed schedule. “You see India playing this Friday and next Friday, which is incredible, on two different sides of the world,” he added.
South Africa’s international schedule is often constrained by domestic commitments, such as the SA20 league, which recently led to the team’s first-choice Test players missing the New Zealand tour. Klaasen believes a busier calendar would benefit the side, allowing them to build rhythm and form.
Despite his own lean run in T20s this year, Klaasen remains optimistic about his game. He has maintained a high strike rate of 164.32 in T20s in 2024 and is hopeful of regaining his best form.
The Proteas will hope to turn their fortunes around with the upcoming series, but Klaasen’s call for more cricket suggests that South Africa’s current schedule remains a point of concern.
