The opening day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur was disrupted by heavy rain and bad light, allowing only 35 overs of play. Bangladesh ended the day at 107 for 3, with Mominul Haque remaining unbeaten on 40.

The match began with a delayed toss, pushed back by an hour due to a wet outfield from overnight rain. Once the toss finally took place, India captain Rohit Sharma elected to bowl first, marking India’s first home Test where they chose to bowl since 2015. Rohit anticipated that the seamers would take advantage of the soft, grassy pitch.

Despite India’s seam attack, which included Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, early breakthroughs were hard to come by as Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan weathered the initial storm. Akash Deep, introduced in the ninth over, changed the momentum. He dismissed Zakir with a catch at gully after the batter edged a delivery. Shortly after, Deep’s successful lbw appeal against Shadman, after a review, further tilted the balance in India’s favor.

Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto batted positively, scoring 31 before being trapped lbw by R Ashwin, ending a 51-run partnership with Mominul.

As rain began to fall just before lunch, the second session was delayed and ultimately, heavy downpour forced the umpires to call off play shortly before 3 PM local time.
