Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who recently retired from all forms of cricket, has been named the new mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The role will see Bravo serving as a consultant for KKR starting in the 2025 season, while also overseeing all other Knight Riders-owned franchises in T20 leagues globally. This includes Trinbago Knight Riders (CPL), Los Angeles Knight Riders (MLC), and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (ILT20).
Bravo’s appointment follows a meeting with KKR CEO Venky Mysore during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), where the two finalized a long-term agreement. Bravo takes over the mentorship role from Gautam Gambhir, who stepped down after guiding KKR to their third IPL title in 2024 to assume the position of India’s head coach. Additionally, KKR has seen the departure of assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, both of whom joined India’s coaching staff.
This will be Bravo’s second management role in the IPL, having previously served as the bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2023. His stint with CSK was immediately successful, as the team secured the IPL title that year, adding to Bravo’s already impressive record of three IPL championships as a player. Known for his exceptional death bowling, Bravo remains the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history and is the only player to have won the Purple Cap twice.
Throughout his T20 career, Bravo claimed over 500 wickets and was regarded as one of the finest tactical bowlers in the format. He retired from international cricket after the 2021 T20 World Cup but continued to play in various T20 leagues, representing teams such as Mumbai Emirates (ILT20), Texas Super Kings (MLC), and Trinbago Knight Riders (CPL).
His transition into coaching has been equally successful, with Bravo recently serving as a consultant coach for Afghanistan during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he helped the team reach the semi-finals for the first time in their history.
Bravo’s vast experience and strategic acumen make him a valuable addition to KKR as they look to build on their recent success under his mentorship.
