Darren Gough, the former England fast bowler, has been appointed head coach of Lahore Qalandars for the upcoming Global Super League (GSL), set to commence in Guyana on November 26. This appointment is seen as a potential stepping stone to a more permanent role with the Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Gough’s hiring comes in the wake of Aaqib Javed’s recent departure, who left his position as head coach and director of cricket operations to join the Pakistan Cricket Board’s selection committee. Under Javed’s leadership, the Qalandars enjoyed considerable success, clinching back-to-back PSL titles in 2022 and 2023. However, the team faced a disappointing season in 2024, finishing at the bottom of the league.

The Lahore Qalandars are eager to fill the coaching vacancy ahead of the PSL, which is scheduled to begin in April 2025. Gough’s experience and insight into player development make him a strong candidate for the role, as he aims to harness the opportunity presented by the GSL to acclimatize himself before a more extended commitment.

In his statement, Gough expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “It’s an absolute honour to have been asked by the Lahore Qalandars to be the head coach for the upcoming Global Super League. I’m really excited about this opportunity… Lahore Qalandars are all about giving young players opportunities they’ve never had before—developing their skills and shaping them into players who can go on to represent the Qalandars, and hopefully make Pakistan cricket proud.”

Sameen Rana, COO of Lahore Qalandars, emphasized that Gough’s vision aligns perfectly with the franchise’s commitment to player development, marking the start of a “new journey” for the team.

The GSL will feature five teams, including the Qalandars, Hampshire Hawks from the T20 Blast, Rangpur Riders from the BPL, Victoria from Australia, and the host team, Guyana Amazon Warriors. The final is scheduled for December 7, 2024.

As Gough prepares for his debut as head coach in the GSL, all eyes will be on the Lahore Qalandars to see if they can revitalize their fortunes and build towards a successful PSL campaign next year.
