Former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has confirmed that he will not be continuing as the bowling coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Steyn, who has been with the franchise since 2022, took to social media to announce his decision, thanking the team for his tenure while expressing his ongoing commitment to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20.

Steyn’s tenure with SRH began ahead of the 2022 season under head coach Tom Moody. He played a crucial role in shaping the team’s bowling unit, which had previously been one of the key strengths of the franchise. However, he had to step aside for the 2024 IPL season due to personal reasons, with former New Zealand pacer James Franklin filling in as the interim bowling coach.

The veteran fast bowler took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his gratitude, stating, “A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa. Two-time winners here in SA20, let’s try to make it three in a row.”

While Steyn will step away from SRH, he will remain closely involved with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape franchise in South Africa’s SA20, where he has enjoyed great success. Under his coaching, Eastern Cape won back-to-back SA20 titles in 2023 and 2024. With their sights set on a third consecutive title, Steyn will be aiming to continue his winning ways with the team in the upcoming season.

The SRH bowling coach role saw several changes during Steyn’s tenure. Brian Lara took over as head coach from Tom Moody in 2023, and ahead of the 2024 season, former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori was appointed as the new head coach. Under Vettori, SRH made their first IPL final since 2018 but fell short against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Steyn has had a notable career as a player in the IPL, representing several franchises including the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Lions, and Deccan Chargers. Despite his playing career being in the past, his impact on coaching, particularly in the fast bowling domain, has been widely appreciated.

In the lead-up to the IPL 2025 season, SRH is reportedly set to retain key players including their captain Pat Cummins, dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen, and young talent Abhishek Sharma. This core group is expected to play a crucial role as the franchise aims to bounce back from a challenging 2024 season and make a strong push for the title.

Steyn’s departure marks the end of a notable chapter with SRH, but his ongoing commitment to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape promises further success in South Africa’s domestic league. Fans will be eager to see how Steyn’s coaching prowess continues to evolve as he leads Eastern Cape towards a potential third consecutive SA20 title.
