Nathan McSweeney will make his Test debut as an opener for Australia in the first Test against India at Optus Stadium in Perth, beginning November 22. The South Australian batsman, who has impressed selectors with his recent form, has been preferred ahead of other contenders, including Marcus Harris, who did not make the squad.

McSweeney, who has been in strong domestic form, averages 43.44 in first-class cricket over the past two years and has scored six centuries in 34 matches. Despite making only 14 and 25 in recent outings against India A, McSweeney’s performances in the Sheffield Shield and his leadership of South Australia contributed to his selection.

“It’s an exciting opportunity, and I feel ready for it,” McSweeney said after his solid displays for Australia A. “I’ve been batting well and hope to continue that form at the next level.”

Josh Inglis, a surprise inclusion, has been named as the reserve batter. The wicketkeeper-batter has been in excellent form in the Sheffield Shield, scoring two centuries this season. He also provides backup to Alex Carey behind the stumps. Inglis, who will captain Australia in the ODI series against Pakistan before joining the Test squad, could be a key figure if called upon.

Scott Boland will join the squad as the backup fast bowler, with the experienced trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood leading the attack.

Selectors have opted for a flexible batting line-up, with the vacancy at the top of the order following David Warner’s retirement and Steven Smith’s shift back to No. 4. “Nathan has the attributes we believe will serve him well at Test level, and Josh has been in excellent touch in domestic cricket,” said George Bailey, chair of selectors.

The 13-player squad also includes Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Nathan Lyon, completing a balanced group ahead of the highly anticipated series.
