New Zealand fast bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match Test series against India due to a knee injury, the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed on Tuesday. The 25-year-old, who was part of the Black Caps’ frontline pacers for the India tour, will miss the series after medical assessments revealed a meniscus tear in his left knee.
Sears had been struggling with knee pain during the recent Test series in Sri Lanka and underwent scans upon returning to New Zealand. Following further medical consultations, it was decided that he would not be fit in time for the series. NZC has yet to confirm the exact timeline for his recovery, but it is hoped that the injury will be addressed with treatment and rehabilitation in the coming weeks.
Sears made an impressive debut during New Zealand’s home summer, where he picked up five wickets in his solitary Test appearance against Australia in Christchurch earlier this year. His absence leaves a significant gap in New Zealand’s fast-bowling attack for the challenging tour of India.
Jacob Duffy Replaces Sears
In a timely move, uncapped fast bowler Jacob Duffy has been called up as Sears’ replacement. Duffy, 30, has been a consistent performer at the domestic level, with 299 first-class wickets to his name. Though he has not yet made his Test debut, Duffy has been a regular fixture in New Zealand’s white-ball squads, playing six ODIs and 14 T20Is.
Duffy, who is set to leave for India on Wednesday – the first day of the series – has also been in strong form recently, playing for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship. Head coach Gary Stead expressed confidence in Duffy’s ability to step up and contribute if selected, praising his recent form in both domestic and international white-ball cricket.
“Jacob’s recent experience in county cricket certainly boosted his case for inclusion,” Stead said. “He’s shown his quality in white-ball formats, and we’re confident that if called upon, he’ll make a significant impact in the Test series as well.”
New Zealand’s Bowling Options for India Tour
With Duffy arriving late, New Zealand will need to rely on their existing bowling resources for the first Test in Bengaluru. Their fast-bowling attack will be led by experienced pacemen Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and Will O’Rourke, while their spin options are bolstered by Ajaz Patel, who is likely to play a key role. All-rounders Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra, and Michael Bracewell offer additional spin and batting depth, while Daryl Mitchell could also contribute with the ball if required.
Stead acknowledged the challenges that New Zealand faces on the Indian subcontinent, but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt. “We’re obviously disappointed for Ben, who has shown a lot of promise in his early career,” Stead said. “However, this is an exciting opportunity for the other bowlers, and Jacob in particular, who has been part of the Test squad before and has every chance of making his Test debut in the series.”
The first Test between New Zealand and India will take place in Bengaluru on Wednesday, followed by matches in Pune and Mumbai. With the absence of Sears, the New Zealand squad will need to draw on their depth and experience to contend with the challenges posed by India’s formidable spin-friendly conditions.
