In a commanding display, the West Indies cruised to a six-wicket victory over Scotland with 50 balls to spare, securing their first win of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The win catapulted them to the top of Group B, boosting their net run rate to 1.154. For Scotland, it was a second defeat in as many games, and the margin of loss could have significant implications for their qualification hopes.

Scotland Struggles with the Bat
West Indies’ bowlers set up the win with an outstanding performance, restricting Scotland to a modest total of 99/8. Scotland’s innings struggled to gain momentum as they found themselves on the back foot early, ending the powerplay at 25/2. Chinelle Henry led the charge with the ball, taking 1/10 from her three overs, including a crucial wicket maiden in her second over that saw Sarah Bryce bowled out for just 2.
Scotland’s top-order woes continued, despite a brief resistance from Kathryn Bryce (26) and Ailsa Lister (26), who stitched together a 46-run partnership for the third wicket. However, the pair were rarely afforded any breathing space, with West Indies’ spinners, led by Afy Fletcher, keeping a tight grip. Fletcher picked up three key wickets, dismissing Lister, Priyanaz Chatterji, and Kathryn Bryce in quick succession to reduce Scotland to 76/5 by the 15th over.
With wickets tumbling, Scotland could only manage a further 23 runs in the final five overs, ending on a meagre 99/8.
West Indies’ Response
In reply, West Indies wasted no time, with Qiana Joseph taking the attack to Scotland’s bowlers in the powerplay. She launched an aggressive assault, scoring 31 off just 18 balls, including three fours and a six. Joseph’s blitzkrieg ensured that the target was reduced to less than half in her brief stay.
Despite her dismissal, the West Indies were in no trouble, with Deandra Dottin (28 off 15) and Chinelle Henry (18 off 10) combining to finish the chase with ease. Dottin’s aggressive stroke play, including two sixes and as many fours, ensured that the West Indies comfortably reached their target in just 15.2 overs, leaving Scotland with little to show for their efforts.
West Indies showed their strength in both batting and bowling as they dominated Scotland from the start. Their bowlers suffocated Scotland’s batters, limiting them to a below-par total before Qiana Joseph’s explosive start and Dottin’s finishing ensured a comfortable victory. With the win, West Indies moved to the top of Group B and will look to build on this momentum as they continue their T20 World Cup campaign.
