Sri Lanka secured a 2-0 series victory over New Zealand after the third ODI at Pallekele International Stadium was called off due to rain. With only 21 overs of play possible in the dead-rubber match, New Zealand were 112/1 when the weather intervened, ensuring the series was already won by the hosts.
New Zealand, having lost the first two matches, won the toss and elected to bat. They got off to a quick start, with Tim Robinson hitting a couple of early boundaries. However, he was dismissed cheaply for 2, caught at mid-off off the bowling of Mohamed Shiraz, who claimed his first ODI wicket. Despite the early setback, Will Young and Henry Nicholls anchored the innings.
Young, who reached his eighth ODI fifty, and Nicholls formed an unbroken 88-run partnership, with both players finding the gaps regularly. Young finished on 56* and Nicholls was unbeaten on 46* when rain stopped play, and with no further action possible, the match was abandoned.
With New Zealand unable to level the series, Sri Lanka took a 2-0 lead, having won the first two matches earlier in the series. The third ODI was the latest in a string of rain-impacted games during the tour, with weather playing a major role in the final outcome.
The series victory marks a strong finish for Sri Lanka, who were dominant throughout the first two games, while New Zealand, despite some solid individual performances, were unable to challenge the hosts.
