South Africa made an easy start to their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a dominant 10-wicket win over the West Indies in Dubai. A brilliant bowling performance by left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba and solid batting by openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits guided South Africa to a comfortable victory in the opening match of the tournament.
South Africa 119 for 0 (Wolvaardt 59*, Brits 57*)
West Indies 118 for 6 (Taylor 44*, Mlaba 4-29, Kapp 2-14)
South Africa won by 10 wickets
West Indies Struggle with the Bat
Batting first, the West Indies never really got going. Their captain, Stafanie Taylor, fought hard, scoring a patient 44* off 41 balls, but the rest of the team struggled. West Indies lost wickets regularly, with Mlaba leading the way for South Africa.
Mlaba struck in the powerplay, removing Qiana Joseph for just 4. She continued her fine work in the middle overs, taking crucial wickets and keeping the pressure on. She bowled a fantastic 12th over, picking up two wickets in two balls—first bowling out Shemaine Campbelle and then having Chinelle Henry caught behind. Mlaba finished with excellent figures of 4 for 29 from her four overs.
Marizanne Kapp also played an important role, dismissing Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin early in the inning. Kapp took 2 for 14 in her four overs, setting the West Indies back and leaving them struggling at 62 for 5 in the 12th over.
In the end, the West Indies managed to post only 118 for 6 in their 20 overs, a total that never looked enough against South Africa’s strong batting lineup.
South Africa Chases with Ease
South Africa’s openers, Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits, made sure there were no surprises in the chase. They got off to a great start, with Wolvaardt in particular finding the boundary early on. Both batters took control of the game, scoring freely as they eased towards the target.
Wolvaardt was aggressive, scoring 29 off 20 balls in the powerplay, while Brits played a more measured role, accumulating 12 off 16 balls. The required run rate never climbed above 6 per over, and by the time they reached 100 in the 15th over, the match was effectively over.
Wolvaardt brought up her half-century in the 15th over, off 45 balls, and Brits followed shortly after with her own fifty, also off 45 balls. The pair finished the job comfortably, with Wolvaardt unbeaten on 59 and Brits on 57, as South Africa wrapped up the win with 13 balls to spare.
