England surged to the top of Group B at the Women’s T20 World Cup with a resounding 10-wicket victory over Scotland in Sharjah, chasing down a modest target of 110 with ten overs to spare. The win not only handed England a comprehensive triumph but also pushed them ahead of South Africa on net run-rate, leaving them in prime position ahead of their crucial group-stage clash against the West Indies on Tuesday.

England Women: 113 for 0 (Bouchier 62*, Wyatt-Hodge 51*)

Scotland Women: 109 for 6 (Kathryn Bryce 33, Ecclestone 2-13)

Scotland’s Struggles with the Bat

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Scotland struggled to build momentum against a disciplined England bowling attack. Captain Kathryn Bryce’s valiant 33 off 28 balls provided some resistance, but Scotland never quite found their rhythm. Her sister Sarah Bryce also contributed significantly with a patient 27 from 31 balls.

Scotland’s innings never truly gained traction, as England kept them in check throughout. Sophie Ecclestone was the standout with the ball, taking 2 for 13 in her four overs, while Lauren Bell, making her first appearance of the tournament, added 1 for 16. Scotland’s innings closed at 109/6, with Lorna Jack-Brown, in her farewell match, being bowled for a duck by Bell.

England’s Ruthless Chase

The chase was a one-sided affair as England’s openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge raced to 113 without losing a wicket in just 10 overs. Bouchier led the charge with a sensational unbeaten 62 off 34 balls, which included 12 boundaries, making her the highest individual scorer of the tournament so far. Wyatt-Hodge was equally aggressive, smashing a blistering 51 off 26 balls, as the pair put on a record-breaking partnership of 113 — the highest opening stand of this World Cup.

The pair’s aggressive approach saw them achieve England’s first-century opening stand in a WT20 World Cup since 2012, and they also recorded the fastest team fifty of the tournament in just 4.4 overs. Bouchier began the chase with a flurry of boundaries, hitting three fours in the first over, and continued to dominate, while Wyatt-Hodge supported her with equally destructive strokes. By the time Bouchier sealed the win with a boundary, England had comfortably surpassed the target with plenty of overs to spare.

Looking Ahead

England’s comprehensive win has positioned them atop Group B, overtaking South Africa on net run-rate. Their final group match against the West Indies will be a virtual knockout, with the winner securing a place in the semifinals. Although both teams can still mathematically advance, a victory will ensure a direct route to the final four.

For Scotland, this defeat marked the end of their first-ever Women’s World Cup campaign, and while the team showed moments of promise, the gulf in class against the top-tier sides was evident. The tournament has been a valuable learning experience for the team, which is still in the early stages of building its women’s cricket infrastructure following the introduction of professional contracts just last year.
