The fourth encounter of the Indian Premier League 2026 was an intriguing contest as Punjab Kings overcame Gujarat Titans by a margin of three wickets at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on March 31. Gujarat Titans Post 162/6 in 20 Overs

Gujarat Titans lost the toss and were asked to bat first. It was a somewhat slow innings that picked up as the top order added some useful runs. Skipper Shubman Gill made a significant contribution at the top with 39 runs from 27 deliveries, hitting six fours. He seemed at ease in the powerplay and led his side to 54 runs in the first six overs.

Wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler steadied the innings with a solid 38 off 33 balls. His innings featured three fours and two sixes, sustaining the scoring rate through the middle overs. Glenn Phillips played a handy knock of 25 runs off 17 balls towards the middle phase of the innings.

Lower down, Washington Sundar added 18 off 16, while Rahul Tewatia was not out on 11. But Gujarat Titans could not kick on at a high pace in the death overs, scoring only 162 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs.

It was a disciplined bowling display from Punjab Kings. Vijaykumar Vyshak was the most impressive bowler, taking three wickets for 34 runs in his four overs. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal continued to play an important part, claiming two wickets for 28 runs while Marco Jansen, with his tight bowling, gave away just 20 runs and took a wicket.

Cooper Connolly Steers Punjab To A Successful Chase

Punjab Kings, chasing 163, lost an early wicket losing Priyansh Arya for 7 runs. But wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh hit back with an attacking knock, scoring 37 off only 24 balls. His innings contained four sixes as Punjab could manage 55 runs in the powerplay.

Cooper Connolly played a sensational knock, which turned the game on its head and was pivotal in guiding Australia home. Connolly finished unbeaten on 72 from 44 deliveries, with five fours and as many sixes. It was his calm yet explosive batting that kept Punjab on top even as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

Captain Shreyas Iyer provided impetus through the middle overs with a quickfire 18 off 11 balls. But Punjab’s middle order crumbled for a short time as they lost three wickets in quick succession, with Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh falling in that period which momentarily shifted some pressure back on the side chasing.

Connolly had a steady head, though, and helped guide the innings into the closing overs. Marco Jansen hit 9 and Xavier Bartlett played a critical cameo, finishing with 11 off five balls. Their partnership took Punjab Kings to 165 for 7 in 19.1 overs, thus confirming the victory.

Gujarat Bowlers Put Up a Fight But Face Defeat

The Gujarat Titans bowlers attempted to defend the total with disciplined spells. The most successful was fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, who took three wickets for 29 runs in his four overs. Star spinner Rashid Khan took one wicket at an economy of 7.20. Washington Sundar and Ashok Sharma also took a wicket each.

But Gujarat’s bowlers failed to disrupt the partnerships built around Connolly, and that would be hugely important tomorrow in deciding the fate of the contest.

Match Summary

There were some eye-catching performances throughout the match but the most decisive contribution came from Cooper Connolly’s unbeaten 72. His solemn innings under pressure helped Punjab Kings grab a crucial early win in the tournament.

This win gave Punjab Kings early momentum in the Indian Premier League 2026, while Gujarat Titans will aim to recover and do better hereafter. The exciting match made again quite clear why the IPL is still one of the most thrilling cricket leagues across the globe.
